75 persons benefit from capacity building workshops under the EU FLEGT Programme
The Environmental Protection Agency as part of the EU FLEGT Programme, completed three workshops during January 2019. These workshops sensitised seventy five (75) participants in Regions 1, 2, and 9 on the importance of applying for Environmental Authorisation. Further, the workshops aim to build capacity of Community Forest Operators on forest sustainability and the importance of applying for Environmental Authorisation.
The overall goal of the programme is to ensure all Community Forest Operators become authorised in keeping with the Environment Protection Act Cap 20:05, Laws of Guyana, persons who commercially harvest and utilise forest resources must first seek approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
To date, the Agency has engaged appropriately 127 persons inclusive of women and youths. The Agency will continue to work with the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) to ensure CFOs are authorised and in compliance.
