Region 1 Community Forestry Organisations benefits from EPA workshop under EU FLEGT programme

 

January 15, 2019 – Twenty seven (27) representatives from five (5) Community Forest (CFOs) benefitted from the day long workshop held in Mabaruma, Region 1. This is the fourth workshop hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the EU FLEGT programme. The workshop was held at the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and aimed at sensitising operators within Community Forest Organisations on the Environmental Authorisation process. The overall aim of the programme is to ensure, all forest operators become authorised in keeping with Section 14 of the Environmental Protection Act Cap. 20:05, laws of Guyana, before development consent is given, in this case the harvesting and utilisation of forest resources, an Operator must first seek approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The participants included women, youths, CFO operators and representative from Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC). Participants were engaged in the theoretical aspect during the morning session which included guidance on filling out the Environmental Authorisation application form. Additionally, the second half of the day included a practical exercise at a nearby sawmill where participants were engaged on best practices relative to waste management, air quality,noise management as well as occupational safety and health.

 

The next workshop is scheduled for January 17, 2019, at Bena Hill Conference Room, Annai, Region 9.
