EPA engages students and Community Forestry Organisations in Region 9 on Environmental Authorisation under the EU FLEGT programme.

January 17, 2019 – Twenty-eight (28) persons from the two Community Forest Organisations, the North Rupununi District Development Council, Bina Hill Institute and the Guyana Forestry Commission were beneficiaries of EPA’s workshop held in Annai, Region 9. This workshop held on January 17, complements those previously held in Regions 10, 2, and 1. As part of the EU FLEGT programme, these workshops aims to build capacity of Community Forest Operators on the importance of Environmental Authorisation for the sustainable utilisation of forest resources. The overall aim of the programme is to ensure all forest operators become authorised in keeping the Environmental Protection Act Cap. 20:05, laws of Guyana. The day-long interactive workshop was divided into a theoretical aspect during the morning session which included guidance on filling out the Environmental Authorisation application form. However, during the second half of the workshop, participants were engaged on best practices relative to waste management, air quality, noise management as well as, occupational safety and health.

Additionally, the Agency was pleased with the participation of youths and women which shows inclusivity and is integral to the EU FLEGT programme. The workshop was well received and participants were also curious about other types of activities which require Environmental Authorisation, how to access and submit application, fees and processing time.

The next workshop is scheduled for February 05, 2019, in Linden.
