As the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brings the curtain down on the FAO-EU FLEGT project ” Providing Capacity Assistance for Community Forest Organisations (CFOs) on the Environmental Authorisation process in Guyana”, 319 persons are better equipped to employ sound environmental practices. The project which commenced in September 2018 utilised awareness and capacity building as a means of supporting CFOs on the process involved in obtaining an Environmental Authorisation in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act, Cap. 20:05, Laws of Guyana.
The Agency conducted 18 exploratory meeting with 99 Powerful/key Actors from 36 CFOs. Further, 12 workshops were conducted with 48 CFOs in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4,6,7,9,& 10; accomplishing 70% of the initial target of 69 CFOs. There are no CFOs in Regions 5 & 8. The workshops were comprehensive focusing principles of sustainable forest management. The target audience included CFO members, women’s groups and youths. The Agency is grateful for the suggest of FAO-EU FLEGT and the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) in the successful execution of this project. The EPA will continue to work with GFC and other partners to ensure effective management of our forest resources.
